The Bedtime Story {Plot}
Gotham City is in the midst of utter and complete turmoil, even more then it once was as hard as that is to believe. The citizens of the dark city have been rather uneasy about their new guardian, the vigilantly Batman, but have been fine with simply letting him clean the city streets of the scum that has infested it.

But now there is an even bigger threat slinking around the underbelly of the chaotic city, someone that seems to have appeared out of a child's worst nightmare. He's a murderous sociopath with a permanent grin disfiguring his face and he's out to set the world on fire just to watch it burn.

All the while the city higher ups are trying their hardest to keep their beloved city from falling completely into the hands of the crooks that inhabit it and the new threat that has taken it upon himself to create as much chaos as he can.

Here's the chance to find out just who you are and what you're made of. Are you a vigilante? A crooked cop? A thug? Or the last of the honorable men in the city? It's time to show what your true colors are, when the night falls in Gotham.

News Flash

Batman struggled forward. The heavy smoke gasping and choking him. He was looking wildly for any sign of where the victims might be. He could hear their cries all around, but he couldn’t see them. He was aware of the masked mans moving and taunting form, but he couldn’t acknowledge him. Not when there were lives at stake…

Finally, he saw one, a body bag that had caught on flame. Throwing himself at it, he madly ripped at the bag opening to help the hostage…

Spellbinder looked over Batman's shoulder from behind to see if he would get the prize.

"Hmm? Doesn't look good... Wait-wait-waitwaitwait-BINGO!"

Though Spellbinder jumped away with his hands in the air and did a victory slide on his knees, the hostage inside didn't look very hostage-like... or even human for that matter. What lay inside was something that resembled a man, a man without clothes, hair, any features, and just his charred and melted skin merged over his bound arms. Like a straight-jacket of burnt skin, it seemed the villain didn't have any problems with tying him up.

Speaking of which-

"Well what are you doing?" Spellbinder was right behind Batman's shoulder again, watching his hostage wriggle and scream from inside the bag. "Don't just stand there watching, help the man! I bet he hasn't scratched his back in ages!"

Ira even went to the trouble of zipping the bag back up and lifting one end to help his adversary. He'd need it, the guy felt like he weighed 160-plus.

Batman almost shrunk away from the horror of the waxy and burnt body, then he realized at a closer look that the figure wasnt human. In fact, wax was just what it was. Kicking the body away, he moved on, still searching for another body.

Finally, he found one, but as he opened it it too turned out to be wax. With a frustrated grunt, he flung it away, continuing on this way, finding bag after bag of melted wax victims and no hostages. His frustration was driving him insane,

"H-Help... Somebody... "

Spellbinder was following Batman closely as the lethal amounts of smoke filled the library, he did not seem to mind, perched on top of book cases, hiding behind shelves, sitting idly at desks, always there waiting for Batman as he found dummy after dummy like a real... dummy himself.

"Help... Hel-Heeeelp... " The whimsical villain heard the weak voice carry over and slinked between book cases like a sneaky thief to come upon a pile of fallen ceiling pieces, books, and even a book case. A heart beat weakly in that mess, and Ira began to dig and dig and dig, tossing books over his shoulder, kicking away chunks of plaster and wood, lifting heavy obstacles.

AFter a few moments of effort, Ira gasped as he came upon the delicate arm of a woman. It moved in a rather weak manner and he began to dig harder. "Don't worry! We'll have ya outta there in no time!" He said suddenly in a rescue worker jumpsuit, hardhat, gloves and all.

Batman was loosing his air, and he coughed heavily when he realized he couldn’t save anyone. All the bags he found seemed to be filled with dummies. He stumbled through the torched library, finally falling against a tall shelve of books, knocking it over and collapsing amid the pile…

Spellbinder slowly approached that fallen hero, carefully planting his feet amongst the myriad of books. Things seemed to feel cooler, calmer, the flame's rage and the shadows it cast high among the windows fiercely burning down to dying embers and flickering silhouettes.

He was holding a woman over his shoulder, out cold from blunt trauma to the back of the head. The illusion was fading, but the people in it were real.

"Oh how the mighty have fallen... " The illusionist mocked in a disappointed tone. "I was more afraid in planning my little entrance than executing it. I guess what they say is true, the Batman really does have more bark than the bite."

Ira turned his head at the sound of sirens closing in the distance, then looked down at the asphyxiated vigilante. A small, murderous thought crossed his mind, flickering like the shadows cast by the small fires that remained from those flames that died long ago. This woman was probably the only survivor, Spellbinder had picked her up to use her in some devious way, but it wasn't even worth the effort now. This was the extent of the Batman's abilities, the so-called hero of Gotham, defeated by his own mind.

"That burning you feel? It is shame!" He taunted the downed hero with a horrible impersonation of a Russian with a thick accent and turned on his heel.

It was the very same heel that Batman’s lax and motionless hand suddenly reached out and grabbed onto with a vise grip. Twisting the leg under him, Batman climbed to his feet, coughing and breathing deeply. He would need medical help after this, undoubtedly his lungs has suffered.

Even so, the illusion had now faded, and now that his mind was cleared that in itself was like a breath of fresh air.

Meaning to force the man to the ground, Batman would attempt to cuff him if he could, coughing and choking as he did so, using all his might to keep the mad man in place…

Spellbinder struggled and managed to get a good punch in that cracked Batman's mask. But to no avail, he went down under that overpowering strength and tried to kick himself away.

With the sirens closing in, it would all soon be over. It was just one mistake, one moment of weakness, how could the tables turn completely around like this!? Ira should've killed him when he had the chance, shouldn't have let mercy be his stinging scar.

He stood with dignity in the vigilante's custody, ready to head out and face the fuzz, flashing lights and guns.

The test... was a failure.

Coughing, and using almost all of the last of his energy, Batman cuffed the masked man to one of the fallen bookcases and stood back on shaky legs. Normally he’d have something witty to say in response to his last remark, but this time, he just needed to get out of there…

He was gone by the time the police arrived on the scene…

"Alright, alright let's get this thing open. Somebody hand me the Halligan."

With heavy grunts, the first pair let loose on the barricaded front doors of the library. Smashing away at wood and reinforced lining, the firefighting team gained forcible entry into the building.

Everything was burned from top to bottom, stained black with thick, muddy ash. There were signs that the sprinklers kicked in, but there were fires that still remained, barely posing threats but still eating away at the building and its contents. Upon the first step, their boots stuck in the thick mud that formed from the condensed ash. The air was thick with smoke as well, settling low around them like heavy mustard gas.

"Jesus! Can't even see in here! Masks on now!"

Fire team Two was already on their way in with the hose, snuffing out small fires sparsely growing all over the library. The first team ventured deeper into the library, finding body bags strewn about at random locations.

"... Over there! We got a live one!"

A moving figure slumped against a book case tried to get himself back onto his feet. The firefighters made haste to approach but the sound of an explosion and a burst of blinding bright fire stopped them. It must've been a gas leak.

"This place is dangerous, c'mon let's get him and get outta here!"They were surprised to find a cop, coughing and hacking on the heavy smoke, and cuffed to the bookcase. Doing a standard check of area integrity, they rushed to his side, his nametag read [JOHNSON]. "You alright?! You okay?!"

The police officer looked up at them and nodded through a wet handkerchief, still coughing on the smoke that filtered through.

"This place could come down on us any minute! C'mon!"

The cop nodded and pointed at his cuffed hand, pulling on it uselessly. One of the fire fighters took the Halligan bar and chopped away at the wood keeping the cuffs in place, setting him free after a few moments.

As the fire team lead their fellow city serviceman out the doors, more explosions racked the library. People gathered outside to see, TV crews were already taking footage, other police were setting up lines and barricades to give the EMTs and other fire crews the space they needed. More explosions, scaring everyone on the scene and forcing them to close their eyes.

"Hey buddy, you know what happened in there?"

Ira coughed more and pointed at the SCBA mask one of the fighters carried, it was given to him unconditionally. After a few breaths, Ira let loose the story.

"It was him! Goddamnit it was him! I was answering a call about a suspicious guy going into the library and it was him!"

"Who? Who?"

Ira pointed at the batcuffs on his wrist.

"The Batman! It was the Batman!"

"Someone look! Up there!"

Everyone looked as a barely distinguishable figure of a bat-like creature emerged from the roof of the library. It seemed to turn its head and white hot eyes on them before flying off across adjacent buildings.
